The Paint the City Purple Campaign is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and preventing domestic and gender-based violence. The campaign encourages communities around the world to unite by painting buildings, landmarks, and public spaces purple, symbolizing solidarity against violence. Through education, advocacy, and support services, the campaign empowers individuals to recognize and address these issues, fostering safer and more inclusive communities for all. Additionally, the campaign partners with local organizations and governments to implement policies and resources that support survivors and promote accountability for perpetrators. Together, we can paint a world where everyone feels safe and respected.
Portia Shipman, the founder, believes that, incorporating various purple elements such as lights, balloons, clothing, and decorations, we can visually express solidarity and raise awareness in diverse ways. Starting the campaign on the 4th Monday in October and concluding on the 1st Saturday of November provides a defined timeframe for global participation and engagement. Additionally, allowing partners to plan fundraising events throughout the year ensures sustained support and momentum leading up to the main awareness days. This approach maximizes impact and fosters long-term commitment to ending domestic and gender-based violence worldwide.
“Our mission is to ignite a global movement against domestic and gender-based violence through the Paint the City Purple Campaign. By painting communities purple, we symbolize our unwavering solidarity and commitment to ending all forms of violence. Through education, support, and advocacy, we strive to empower survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and create a world where everyone can thrive in safety and dignity.”
