PREVALENCE AND IMPACT of gbv
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive issue affecting individuals and societies worldwide. Below is an overview of its global impact across various demographics and sectors. These statistics underscore the extensive and multifaceted impact of gender-based violence globally, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to address and mitigate its effects.
to Women and Girls
Approximately one in three women globally have experienced physical and/or
sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
to Adolescent Girls
Nearly 24% of adolescent girls aged 15–19 who have been in relationships have
experienced physical or sexual violence from a partner.
to Childrens
Globally, up to 1 billion children aged 2–17 years have experienced physical, sexual, or
emotional violence or neglect in the past year.
MORTALITY
Femicide: In 2022, around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members, equating to more than five women or girls every hour.
ECONOMIC IMPACT
Global Cost: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global cost of violence against women and girls was estimated at approximately US$1.5 trillion, about 2% of the global domestic product.
